LEAVING LISMORE | 2022 | SERIES OF 3

Female figures placed in damaged furniture: Found objects, clay and paint.

it’s not the strongest of species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change - Charles Darwin.

She’s leaving. She was given no choice. Everything she once owned and loved has washed away. All that’s left is in a devastating pile mingled with the debris of neighbouring homes destroyed by the power of the all mighty waters. It changed everything. It made her feel small and vulnerable like never before. But you can tell from the determination in her posture and forward looking focus that she will never lose faith and hope. This small sculpture of a woman paddling to safety in a water damaged drawer is honouring the greatness of those with courage, resilience and the ability to adapt to change. She’s representing not only those who faced the floods, but all refugees around the world forced to leaving behind more than what we can behold, yet able to adapt and survive.
